Description

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research company based in San Francisco, California. Its main goal is to create AI that is safe and helpful for people, aiming to build artificial general intelligence (AGI) that can outperform humans in many important tasks. OpenAI’s best-known product is ChatGPT, a conversational AI that can help draft emails, write code, explain tough topics, brainstorm ideas, and more. Besides ChatGPT, OpenAI offers DALL-E for AI-generated images, Whisper for speech recognition, and an API that lets developers add OpenAI’s models to their own apps. Companies use these tools for customer support, content creation, software development, and data analysis, making OpenAI’s tech useful in nearly every industry.

OpenAI began as a nonprofit with philanthropic support in December 2015, but needed more funding as AI development grew. In 2019, OpenAI set up a capped-profit model to attract investors while keeping its nonprofit board in charge. Things took off after ChatGPT launched in late 2022, sparking huge interest in generative AI. By late 2025, weekly active users passed 800 million, and annual revenue jumped from $3.5 million in 2020 to an estimated $20 billion.

Such rapid growth has attracted major investors. Microsoft has been a steady supporter, investing nearly $14 billion over several rounds and earning 20% of OpenAI’s revenue. SoftBank made an even bigger impact by leading a record $40 billion Series F round in March 2025, with a $30 billion commitment. Other big names backing OpenAI include Thrive Capital, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, Fidelity, Blackstone, and TPG. In total, OpenAI has raised about $57.9 billion, boosting its valuation to $300 billion and making it one of the most valuable private companies worldwide.
