Caldera is a layer-2 infrastructure platform designed as a decentralized AI protocol and rollup deployment system. It gives teams the tools to launch high-performance, app-specific rollups on Ethereum and connect them into what the project calls a Metalayer.

The network can be used for everything from DeFi and NFT gaming to AI-focused tasks. Developers can create custom chains for compute-heavy jobs like inference, data marketplaces, or hosting decentralized models, and then link these chains to others in the Metalayer for token transfers and a seamless user experience.

Caldera was founded in 2022 and started as a “rollup-as-a-service” platform to help Web3 teams launch specialized layer-2 networks. The project has grown steadily since then. Early fundraising in 2023 brought in seed capital, and a larger Series A in mid-2024 helped expand the team and move closer to the Metalayer vision.

Caldera’s native cryptocurrency is called $ERA, which is used as both a utility and governance token. It pays for network services, rewards validators and builders, and lets users take part in on-chain governance. ERA can also be staked for security, given as ecosystem incentives, and used to settle fees across connected rollups.
