Description

Animoca Brands is a Hong Kong-based blockchain gaming company and venture investor that builds, acquires, and backs projects advancing digital property rights on public blockchains. Founded in 2014 as a spinoff from the mobile gaming company Animoca, it listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in January 2015 and delisted in March 2020. Today it operates as a game publisher with titles like The Sandbox and Crazy Defense Heroes and as one of the most active venture investors in the Web3 space.

The company’s core thesis is that digital ownership changes everything. On traditional gaming platforms, your in-game items belong to the platform. Animoca Brands builds products where players own their assets as NFTs and can transfer or sell them freely. Animoca Brands describes its mission as advancing digital property rights for the open metaverse.

The product portfolio spans gaming, education, identity, and infrastructure. The Sandbox is an Ethereum-based virtual world with over 400 brand partnerships, including Warner Music, Gucci, and Snoop Dogg. As of mid-2024, The Sandbox had over 5.7 million user accounts connected to crypto wallets. Other subsidiaries include GAMEE, TinyTap, Open Campus, and Mocaverse, which provides identity and reputation infrastructure for the Animoca ecosystem.

As of Q4 2024, Animoca Brands held over 540 investments spanning AI, infrastructure, DeFi, and gaming. Notable holdings include Consensys, Kraken, Axie Infinity, OpenSea, Dapper Labs, and Yield Guild Games. In 2024 alone, the company made over 70 new investments. Total assets stood at about $4.3 billion as of late 2024, with nearly $300 million in cash and stablecoins and over $500 million in digital assets.

Animoca Brands reported $314 million in bookings for 2024, a 12% increase from the prior year. Revenue comes from three sources: incubated projects like The Sandbox and Mocaverse, its digital asset advisory business, and investment activity across its portfolio.

Animoca Brands has raised $880 million across 22 funding rounds. The investor list reads like a who’s who of crypto-adjacent capital. In August 2022, Singapore sovereign wealth fund Temasek co-led a $110 million round with GGV Capital at a $6 billion valuation to make the company pre-IPO ready. In October 2021, Ubisoft and Sequoia Capital participated in a $65 million round at a $2.2 billion valuation. SoftBank invested in The Sandbox directly at a $93 million round in November 2021. NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s smart city project under Vision 2030, invested $50 million in Animoca Brands to promote Web3 development. Additional backers include Kingsway Capital, Liberty City Ventures, Polygon Ventures, OKX, and Foresight Ventures.

In November 2025, Animoca Brands announced plans to list on the Nasdaq through a reverse merger with Currenc Group, with Animoca shareholders expected to own approximately 95% of the combined entity. The transaction is targeted to close in 2026.

Animoca Brands is currently a private company, and its shares are not listed on any public exchange.
